There has been a flurry of articles recently in the U.S. press about an executive jet used by "American intelligence agencies" to transport abducted "terrorist suspects" for interrogation to third countries that use torture. The mainstream media, however, largely omits the essential details about "extraordinary rendition," a practice begun during the Clinton administration, and ignores the legal questions it raises.
The Sunday Times (UK) wrote about the mystery jet, a Gulfstream 5, on Nov. 14, saying it had obtained the logs of some 300 flights showing "the movements of the Gulfstream 5 leased by agents from the U.S. defense department and the CIA."
According to the Times, the logs indicate that the U.S. has used the plane to transport abducted "prisoners" to "countries with poor human rights records" where they have been turned over to the authorities for "torture by proxy."
During the past two years, the plane, which "always" departs from Washington, D.C., "has flown to 49 destinations outside America, including the Guantanamo Bay prison camp in Cuba and other U.S. military bases." Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Morocco, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan are among the foreign destinations of the "torture jet," which has the registration number N379P.
The Gulfstream made at least seven trips to Uzbekistan, a dictatorship allied with the U.S. in the "war on terror," where the Times wrote, the "secret police are notorious for their interrogation methods, including the alleged boiling of prisoners."
"I have come across many cases of rape in front of family members who they wish to extract information from," Craig Murray, the former British ambassador to Uzbekistan, said recently on Swedish television. "I have post mortem photos of a corpse," Murray said. "These show that the person was boiled to death."
Murray said U.S. agents have sent "terrorist suspects" from Afghanistan to Uzbekistan to be interrogated by torture. Murray was recently removed from his post after he sent a memo to Foreign Minister Jack Straw, in which he reported that the CIA station chief in Tashkent had "readily acknowledged torture was deployed in obtaining intelligence."
The Washington Post, Boston Globe, and Chicago Tribune all recently reported on the torture jet, but have focused on the phony companies with whom the plane is registered rather than on the serious crimes it has been used to commit.
THE SWEDISH CONNECTION
Much of the information about the "torture flights" has come from a Swedish journalist, Fredrik Laurin, who has produced four television programs about the kidnapping and "enforced disappearance" of two Egyptians from Sweden in December 2001.
The four-part "Kalla Fakta" (Cold Facts) program about the "enforced disappearance" of the two Egyptians, Ahmed Agiza, 39, and Muhammad Al Zery, 33, began on Swedish television on May 17, 2004 and can be viewed on-line. The most important details of the abductions, however, are not found in the U.S. press.
In the afternoon of December 18, 2001, Ahmed Agiza was picked up by police on his way home from Swedish lessons in the western town of Karlstad. His wife and 5 children awaited him at home.
Meanwhile in Stockholm, Swedish security police, SÄPO, arrested Al Zery at his job. The two Egyptians were then driven to Bromma airport in Stockholm.
Paul Forell, a policeman with 25 years experience, was at the police station at Bromma airport that night. Forell told Laurin what he observed:
"First came the security police (SÄPO) …after five or ten minutes two Americans arrived, in civilian suits, and we stood there for a while talking," he said. The Americans, he said, were about 35 years old, gave their first names and said they were from the U.S. Embassy.
"Well, then came this group with the arrested men into the station, and everything went very fast," Forell said. "The arrested men, wearing their own clothes, were shackled hand and foot."
Asked who brought the men into the station, Forell said: "The Americans. The Swedish policemen stayed behind in the outer, public premises," he said. "There were three to four men to each of the arrested." The Americans were "dressed in jeans and shirts, and wearing black masks."
Forell, a bystander, was the only uniformed policeman. "There was hardly room for me in my own station," he said.
Laurin described what happened next: The arrested men were placed in the station's changing-room and while shackled hand and foot, their clothes were cut off in pieces. When the men were naked, "suppositories of an unknown kind were inserted into their rectums."
Dressed in diapers and dark overalls, blindfolded and hooded, the men were then brought back to the cars, Laurin reported.
The Gulfstream 5 with the registration N379P, "flying for the U.S. Dept. of Defense," waited on the tarmac several hundred yards away.
"One of the prisoners was placed lying on the floor with his hands and feet cuffed together behind his back. The other was strapped fast in the cabin, with his hands over his head."
The two arrested Egyptians, about eight Americans, and two Swedish police from SÄPO took off at 9:49 p.m., Kalla Fakta reported. "When the plane landed in Cairo at 3 a.m., the men were turned over to Egyptian intelligence officers."
NO EVIDENCE
"Disguised agents from an elite American military unit, answering directly to the White House, are allowed to take command on Swedish soil, contrary to Swedish law. In a secret and brutal operation, two Egyptians who have asylum in Sweden are kidnapped and brought to Egypt to be tortured," Kalla Fakta reported. "They are suspected of terrorism, but no evidence is presented."
After two and a half years of torture in an Egyptian prison, Al Zery was declared innocent and released. Agiza, in an Egyptian military trial, was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
American journalist Seymour Hersh, in an interview with Kalla Fakta, seems to identify with the perpetrators of the illegal abductions with his constant use of the pronoun "we".
"We talk about the most sensitive operation in the world," Hersh said. "With ability to go into a country with false documents, get into any country in the world, get to the house of somebody that we're looking for, knock on their door, drag them out, put them on an airplane and fly them away to various facilities…where we can do interrogation, or our allies can do interrogation for us.
"What happened in Sweden was going to happen and did happen around the world. People were taken, without due recourse for any legal worries, period. And it can happen because we wanted it to happen," Hersh said.
The Gulfstream 5 has completed at least 72 such operations in more than 30 countries, Kalla Fakta reported. And it always follows the same pattern. "After take off from its home base in Smithfield, North Carolina, it makes a short stop at Dulles International Airport, close to CIA headquarters and the Pentagon.
"It flies exclusively to countries that are allied with the U.S. in the fight against terror: Morocco, Libya, Egypt, Jordan, Uzbekistan, and Pakistan," Kalla Fakta reported, "countries where prisoners are kept and interrogated, far beyond the reach of American and international courts."
DISAPPEARED ESTONIANS
U.S. enforced disappearances from Sweden are nothing new, according to Swedish journalist Sven Anér. More than 10 years ago, on Sept. 28, 1994, nine Estonian survivors from the Estonia ferry disaster "disappeared" in a similar manner.
The day after the sinking, 9 crew members were removed from the lists of 146 reported survivors as a Gulfstream 4 (Reg. N971L), and a Boeing 727-200 (Reg. VR-CLM), left Stockholm's Arlanda airport carrying 4 and 5 unregistered passengers each. Anér has the documents from the airport's archive that show that the fees for the two airplanes were paid by the U.S. Embassy in Stockholm.
Among those who disappeared after having been on the survivor lists from Estonia were one of captains, Avo Piht, and the ship's chief engineer, Lembit Leiger. Piht and Leiger would be key witnesses as to the ship's seaworthiness, its cargo, and causes of its mysterious sinking, which took 852 lives.
CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY
"Enforced disappearance" and torture are "crimes against humanity," according to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, which the Bush administration opposes.
Enforced disappearance, according to the 1998 statute, "means the arrest, detention or abduction of persons by, or with the authorization, support or acquiescence of, a State or a political organization, followed by a refusal to acknowledge that deprivation of freedom or to give information on the fate or whereabouts of those persons, with the intention of removing them from the protection of the law for a prolonged period of time."
While inquiries at the Departments of State, Defense, and Justice about the legality of "extraordinary renditions" went unanswered, a March 19, 2004 memo from Jack L. Goldsmith, Assistant Attorney General, clearly reveals the Bush administration's intent to defy international law.
Goldsmith's memo, written to Alberto R. Gonzales, then counsel to the President, and the top lawyers at the Dept. of State, Defense, CIA, and National Security Council, states that the U.S. does not have to abide by Article 49 of the 4th Geneva Convention.
Article 49, however, is very clear: "Individual or mass forcible transfers, as well as deportation of protected persons from occupied territory to the territory of the Occupying Power or to that of any other country, occupied or not, are prohibited, regardless of their motive."
Like a Talmudist negating Mosaic Law, after 13 pages of tortuous arguments, Goldsmith writes: "We conclude that it is permissible to relocate 'protected persons' who have not been accused of an offense from Iraq to another country, for a brief but not indefinite period, for purposes of interrogation."
Legal experts say that Goldsmith's "torture memo" led to the widespread abuse of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib.
Goldsmith, who is considered a "war criminal" by some international lawyers for his authorization of war crimes in the "torture memo," recently accepted a teaching position at Harvard Law School (HLS).
Francis A. Boyle, magna cum laude graduate of Harvard Law School and professor of international law at the University of Illinois, is working to have Goldsmith and the deans who hired him at HLS replaced. Boyle said that allowing a "war criminal" like Goldsmith to teach law is "an abandonment and betrayal of 80 years of progressive legal studies at Harvard."

AN “INVISIBLE ARMY” FIGHTS
THE MEDIA LIES ABOUT 9/11
Fighting against the secrecy of the government and the disinformation of the corporate media, an invisible army of citizens is fighting to expose the lies about 9/11.Here the top section comprising 30 floors of the South Tower has broken off.
As Hufschmid describes: "The white clouds show that the pulverizing process is occurring in the portion of the tower that is below the fire zone." [Painful Questions, p. 47]
SANTA BARBARA, California - Three thousand miles from New York City and Washington, this idyllic California coastal town is a hotbed of citizen activists fighting to uncover the truth about what really happened on 9/11. A handful of local residents here have spearheaded a nation-wide effort to expose the lies that make up the official version of events of the Pentagon the World Trade Center attacks.
One year after 9/11, Eric Hufschmid, a self-employed computer software developer, published his exposé Painful Questions: An Analysis of the September 11th Attack. Hufschmid's large format book contains many important color photographs of the World Trade Center and Pentagon not seen anywhere else. He spent some $6,000 for the rights to use high-resolution photographs from Reuters, Associated Press, and other sources.
The most significant photos in Painful Questions are of the collapsing towers, which show dust and debris being shot out hundreds of feet. These high-resolution photos reveal that the top 30-floor section of the South Tower broke off and began tipping over, contrary to the commonly accepted fire-induced pancake collapse scenario promoted by government appointed investigators and the controlled press. The photographs reveal huge explosions occurring at the breaking point and in both the upper and lower sections simultaneously.
Rather than falling to the ground, the photographs reveal that the tipping 30-floor section was demolished by explosions that pulverized the concrete. Hufschmid presents this evidence in an important series of 8 high-resolution color photos.
Now in its second printing, Painful Questions, printed on high-quality glossy paper, presents evidence that debunks the government's conspiracy theory that 19 Arabs with box cutters outsmarted the U.S. military and caused the massive devastation of 9/11.
THE SILENCE OF THE MEDIA
While Hufschmid's work is cited in numerous books about 9/11, no mainstream media outlet has ever contacted him. Painful Questions can be obtained directly from the author at www.hugequestions.com.
“The mainstream media ignore information they don't want people to know about,” Hufschmid says. “TV is the modern weapon. It's better than a bomb. Whoever controls it has the people and the people don't even realize it. This television fantasy world is what we are fighting against. My book and DVD are weapons for the invisible army in this information war.”
Asked about the media's avoidance of the unanswered questions of 9/11, Hufschmid said: “My guess is that some are there to cover it up; some are afraid to speak the truth; and some are truly ignorant.”
Asked about the military's reaction, he said: “I would expect our military to be concerned about how they were beaten by such a small group of primitive people. Football coaches do more of an analysis of their games to learn from their mistakes.
“If 19 Arabs with no technology could pull off that attack and cause that much destruction, what could 5,000 terrorists with advanced technology do?”
Hufschmid says he cannot believe that the U.S. military would allow the demolition of the WTC to occur. “It caused such extreme suffering and devastation,” he said. “It feels to me that it was done by selfish people whose primary interest is not America.
“Some members of the conspiracy took advantage of the attack and demolished the WTC for their own selfish reasons,” Hufschmid said. “Without the WTC attack, we basically have a symbolic attack on the Pentagon, similar to what we see in the Northwoods plan.”
The most obvious parts of the scam, according to Hufschmid, are the demolition of WTC 7, the explosion of the towers into dust in 10 seconds, and the confiscation of video evidence from private businesses around the Pentagon and the lack of any photographic or seismic evidence that a Boeing 757 even hit the Pentagon.
Regarding the remark in the FEMA building performance report stating that the cause of WTC 7 collapse is unknown, Hufschmid said: “We say we can put a man on the moon but we can't figure out what happened to building 7?”
SILVERSTEIN'S SUSPICIOUS BEHAVIOR
Asked about Larry Silverstein, the owner of WTC 7, who had obtained a 99-year lease for the twin towers only five weeks before 9/11, Hufschmid said: “Silverstein has to know that the towers were brought down with explosives. He even admitted on PBS that the commander of the fire department demolished the building - as Silverstein had suggested - rather than put the fires out.”
Eight thousand copies of Painful Questions have been distributed, primarily through the efforts of an “invisible army” of ordinary citizens who have purchased Hufschmid's book in bulk and pass it on.
Another local resident, Jimmy Walter, sent Painful Questions and Hufschmid's two-hour DVD Painful Deceptions to every member of Congress at his own expense. “I was so impressed with this book and the questions it raises,” Walter wrote, “that I will send a free copy to any fire station, police precinct, judge or politician that requests it.”
In September, Walter bought full-page color ads in mainstream magazines and newspapers such as Newsweek, BusinessWeek, and The New York Times, promoting Painful Questions and raising some of the “very troubling” and unanswered questions about 9/11.
Walter's ad in Reader's Digest, however, was cancelled by the publishers - without explanation - after having been accepted. American Free Press, which no longer sells Painful Questions, sold hundreds of copies during the brief period when it did.
Hufschmid told me that he does not even sell one book a day to individuals. “It's primarily being bought in quantity by housewives and ordinary citizens who are worried about the future of this country. They are buying the book and DVD and pushing it on their friends. It is often difficult for these people to get their family and friends to look seriously at this issue. It frightens and upsets people.”

On Oct. 12, the Washington office of Sen. Mark Dayton (D-Minn.) was suddenly closed until after Election Day due to security concerns. Dayton's Minnesota office told me the closure was based on information contained in an intelligence briefing.
Bill Pickle, Sergeant at Arms for the U.S. Senate, told me that Sen. Dayton had shown caution and acted on intelligence information from the previous week. Dayton's chief of staff and press spokesman could not be reached by press time.
At Congressional hearings on July 31, Dayton spoke out and complained about the government's lies and incompetence in the official 9/11 Commission report. Speaking about the military's fabrications concerning their failure to respond properly to the “hijacked” planes, Dayton said: “They [NORAD] lied to the American people, they lied to Congress and they lied to your 9/11 Commission to create a false impression of competence, communication, coordination and protection of the American people.
“And we can set up all the oversight possible at great additional cost to the American taxpayers and it won't be worth an Enron pension if the people responsible lie to us; if they take the records and doctor them into falsehoods, and if they get away with it.”

AN “INVISIBLE ARMY” FIGHTS
THE MEDIA LIES ABOUT 9/11

SANTA BARBARA, California - Three thousand miles from New York City and Washington, this idyllic California coastal town is a hotbed of citizen activists fighting to uncover the truth about what really happened on 9/11. A handful of local residents here have spearheaded a nation-wide effort to expose the lies that make up the official version of events of the Pentagon the World Trade Center attacks.
One year after 9/11, Eric Hufschmid, a self-employed computer software developer, published his exposé Painful Questions: An Analysis of the September 11th Attack. Hufschmid's large format book contains many important color photographs of the World Trade Center and Pentagon not seen anywhere else. He spent some $6,000 for the rights to use high-resolution photographs from Reuters, Associated Press, and other sources.
The most significant photos in Painful Questions are of the collapsing towers, which show dust and debris being shot out hundreds of feet. These high-resolution photos reveal that the top 30-floor section of the South Tower broke off and began tipping over, contrary to the commonly accepted fire-induced pancake collapse scenario promoted by government appointed investigators and the controlled press. The photographs reveal huge explosions occurring at the breaking point and in both the upper and lower sections simultaneously.
Rather than falling to the ground, the photographs reveal that the tipping 30-floor section was demolished by explosions that pulverized the concrete. Hufschmid presents this evidence in an important series of 8 high-resolution color photos.
Now in its second printing, Painful Questions, printed on high-quality glossy paper, presents evidence that debunks the government's conspiracy theory that 19 Arabs with box cutters outsmarted the U.S. military and caused the massive devastation of 9/11.
THE SILENCE OF THE MEDIA
While Hufschmid's work is cited in numerous books about 9/11, no mainstream media outlet has ever contacted him. Painful Questions can be obtained directly from the author at www.hugequestions.com.
“The mainstream media ignore information they don't want people to know about,” Hufschmid says. “TV is the modern weapon. It's better than a bomb. Whoever controls it has the people and the people don't even realize it. This television fantasy world is what we are fighting against. My book and DVD are weapons for the invisible army in this information war.”
Asked about the media's avoidance of the unanswered questions of 9/11, Hufschmid said: “My guess is that some are there to cover it up; some are afraid to speak the truth; and some are truly ignorant.”
Asked about the military's reaction, he said: “I would expect our military to be concerned about how they were beaten by such a small group of primitive people. Football coaches do more of an analysis of their games to learn from their mistakes.
“If 19 Arabs with no technology could pull off that attack and cause that much destruction, what could 5,000 terrorists with advanced technology do?”
Hufschmid says he cannot believe that the U.S. military would allow the demolition of the WTC to occur. “It caused such extreme suffering and devastation,” he said. “It feels to me that it was done by selfish people whose primary interest is not America.
“Some members of the conspiracy took advantage of the attack and demolished the WTC for their own selfish reasons,” Hufschmid said. “Without the WTC attack, we basically have a symbolic attack on the Pentagon, similar to what we see in the Northwoods plan.”
The most obvious parts of the scam, according to Hufschmid, are the demolition of WTC 7, the explosion of the towers into dust in 10 seconds, and the confiscation of video evidence from private businesses around the Pentagon and the lack of any photographic or seismic evidence that a Boeing 757 even hit the Pentagon.
Regarding the remark in the FEMA building performance report stating that the cause of WTC 7 collapse is unknown, Hufschmid said: “We say we can put a man on the moon but we can't figure out what happened to building 7?”
SILVERSTEIN'S SUSPICIOUS BEHAVIOR
Asked about Larry Silverstein, the owner of WTC 7, who had obtained a 99-year lease for the twin towers only five weeks before 9/11, Hufschmid said: “Silverstein has to know that the towers were brought down with explosives. He even admitted on PBS that the commander of the fire department demolished the building - as Silverstein had suggested - rather than put the fires out.”
Eight thousand copies of Painful Questions have been distributed, primarily through the efforts of an “invisible army” of ordinary citizens who have purchased Hufschmid's book in bulk and pass it on.
Another local resident, Jimmy Walter, sent Painful Questions and Hufschmid's two-hour DVD Painful Deceptions to every member of Congress at his own expense. “I was so impressed with this book and the questions it raises,” Walter wrote, “that I will send a free copy to any fire station, police precinct, judge or politician that requests it.”
In September, Walter bought full-page color ads in mainstream magazines and newspapers such as Newsweek, BusinessWeek, and The New York Times, promoting Painful Questions and raising some of the “very troubling” and unanswered questions about 9/11.
Walter's ad in Reader's Digest, however, was cancelled by the publishers - without explanation - after having been accepted. American Free Press, which no longer sells Painful Questions, sold hundreds of copies during the brief period when it did.
Hufschmid told me that he does not even sell one book a day to individuals. “It's primarily being bought in quantity by housewives and ordinary citizens who are worried about the future of this country. They are buying the book and DVD and pushing it on their friends. It is often difficult for these people to get their family and friends to look seriously at this issue. It frightens and upsets people.”

In addition to wild animal species, protected and endangered timber and plant species are also at risk due to international smuggling and illegal timber harvesting and plant collection. Among the plant species threatened by this black market are agarwood (aloe wood), ramin wood, ginger, and ginseng. Financially, these species represent a significant proportion of the transnational illegal wildlife trade, either in the form of timber, live flowers or bulbs, or aromatics and other derivatives. Other crimes against nature that Wildlife Alliance tries to stop are deforestation caused by land encroachment or drug and charcoal manufacturing that devastate the rainforest.

An Israeli woman was killed in a suicide bomber the southern Israeli town of Dimona, the first such attack in over a year
Israeli investigators were checking whether the attacker came via Egypt after Palestinian militants breached the Gaza-Egypt border last month.
A second suicide attacker was shot dead before he was able to detonate his explosives belt, said Israeli police.
Moreover, responsibility was claimed by the Army of Palestine group, of the pro-Fatah group the al-Aqsa Martyr Brigades.
The explosion happened in a commercial centre a few kilometers from the Dimona base which houses Israeli top-secret nuclear reactor.
A witness told Israeli army radio that we heard a large explosion and people started to run. I saw pieces of flesh flying in the air.
Meanwhile, thousands of Palestinians poured out of the Gaza Strip unchecked when the Egypt-Gaza border was breached by the territory de facto rulers Hamas on 23 January. The border was resealed on Sunday by Egyptian forces.
Al Aqsa and the attack
However, the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade emailed news organizations said it had sent attackers from the West Bank town of Ramallah to carry out the heroic martyrdom bombing in Dimona.
Mr. Fawzi Barhoum, a Hamas spokesman said that the attack was a natural reaction to months of killing of Palestinians by the Israeli army.
Hamas also rejected suggestions that the bombing would hurt its chances of reopening the border with Egypt.
Israel was pummeled by series of suicide bombings in the 1990s and 2000s, peaking after the Palestinian intifada or uprising broke out in 2000.
However, there were only two such attacks between April 2006 and now, the last being in January 2007 when a bomber blew himself up in a bakery in Eilat, killing three people.
Blast on Monday is also the first since renewed efforts to come to an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal were launched with US support last November.

An Israeli woman was killed in a suicide bomber the southern Israeli town of Dimona, the first such attack in over a year
Israeli investigators were checking whether the attacker came via Egypt after Palestinian militants breached the Gaza-Egypt border last month.
A second suicide attacker was shot dead before he was able to detonate his explosives belt, said Israeli police.
Moreover, responsibility was claimed by the Army of Palestine group, of the pro-Fatah group the al-Aqsa Martyr Brigades.
The explosion happened in a commercial centre a few kilometers from the Dimona base which houses Israeli top-secret nuclear reactor.
A witness told Israeli army radio that we heard a large explosion and people started to run. I saw pieces of flesh flying in the air.
Meanwhile, thousands of Palestinians poured out of the Gaza Strip unchecked when the Egypt-Gaza border was breached by the territory de facto rulers Hamas on 23 January. The border was resealed on Sunday by Egyptian forces.
Al Aqsa and the attack
However, the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade emailed news organizations said it had sent attackers from the West Bank town of Ramallah to carry out the heroic martyrdom bombing in Dimona.
Mr. Fawzi Barhoum, a Hamas spokesman said that the attack was a natural reaction to months of killing of Palestinians by the Israeli army.
Hamas also rejected suggestions that the bombing would hurt its chances of reopening the border with Egypt.
Israel was pummeled by series of suicide bombings in the 1990s and 2000s, peaking after the Palestinian intifada or uprising broke out in 2000.
However, there were only two such attacks between April 2006 and now, the last being in January 2007 when a bomber blew himself up in a bakery in Eilat, killing three people.
Blast on Monday is also the first since renewed efforts to come to an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal were launched with US support last November.

Iran’s nuclear threat is a lie

Obama's "showdown" with Iran has another agenda. The media have been tasked with preparing the public for endless war
In 2001, the Observer published a series of reports that claimed an "Iraqi connection" to al-Qaeda, even describing the base in Iraq where the training of terrorists took place and a facility where anthrax was being manufactured as a weapon of mass destruction. It was all false. Supplied by US intelligence and Iraqi exiles, planted stories in the British and US media helped George Bush and Tony Blair to launch an illegal invasion which caused, according to the most recent study, 1.3 million deaths.
Something similar is happening over Iran: the same syncopation of government and media "revelations", the same manufacture of a sense of crisis. "Showdown looms with Iran over secret nuclear plant", declared the Guardian on 26 September. "Showdown" is the theme. High noon. The clock ticking. Good versus evil. Add a smooth new US president who has "put paid to the Bush years". An immediate echo is the notorious Guardian front page of 22 May 2007: "Iran's secret plan for summer offensive to force US out of Iraq". Based on unsubstantiated claims by the Pentagon, the writer Simon Tisdall presented as fact an Iranian "plan" to wage war on, and defeat, US forces in Iraq by September of that year - a demonstrable falsehood for which there has been no retraction.
The official jargon for this kind of propaganda is "psy-ops", the military term for psychological operations. In the Pentagon and Whitehall, it has become a critical component of a diplomatic and military campaign to blockade, isolate and weaken Iran by hyping its “nuclear threat": a phrase now used incessantly by Barack Obama and Gordon Brown, and parroted by the BBC and other broadcasters as objective news. And it is fake.
The threat is one-way
On 16 September, Newsweek disclosed that the major US intelligence agencies had reported to the White House that Iran's "nuclear status" had not changed since the National Intelligence Estimate of November 2007, which stated with "high confidence" that Iran had halted in 2003 the programme it was alleged to have developed. The International Atomic Energy Agency has backed this, time and again.
The current propaganda derives from Obama's announcement that the US is scrapping missiles stationed on Russia's border. This serves to cover the fact that the number of US missile sites is actually expanding in Europe and the "redundant" missiles are being redeployed on ships. The game is to mollify Russia into joining, or not obstructing, the US campaign against Iran. "President Bush was right," said Obama, "that Iran's ballistic missile programme poses a significant threat [to Europe and the US]." That Iran would contemplate a suicidal attack on the US is preposterous. The threat, as ever, is one-way, with the world's superpower virtually ensconced on Iran's borders.
Iran's crime is its independence. Having thrown out America's favourite tyrant, Shah Reza Pahlavi, Iran remains the only resource-rich Muslim state beyond US control. As only Israel has a "right to exist" in the Middle East, the US goal is to cripple the Islamic Republic. This will allow Israel to divide and dominate the Middle East on Washington's behalf, undeterred by a confident neighbour. If any country in the world has been handed urgent cause to develop a nuclear "deterrence", it is Iran.
As one of the original signatories of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Iran has been a consistent advocate of a nuclear-free zone in the Middle East. In contrast, Israel has never agreed to an IAEA inspection, and its nuclear weapons plant at Dimona remains an open secret. Armed with as many as 200 active nuclear warheads, Israel "deplores" UN resolutions calling on it to sign the NPT, just as it deplored the recent UN report charging it with crimes against humanity in Gaza, just as it maintains a world record for violations of international law. It gets away with this because great power grants it immunity.
Preparing for endless war
Obama's "showdown" with Iran has another agenda. On both sides of the Atlantic the media have been tasked with preparing the public for endless war. The US/Nato commander General Stanley McChrystal says 500,000 troops will be required in Afghanistan over five years, according to America's NBC. The goal is control of the "strategic prize" of the gas and oilfields of the Caspian Sea, central Asia, the Gulf and Iran - in other words, Eurasia. But the war is opposed by 69 per cent of the British public, 57 per cent of the US public and almost every other human being. Convincing "us" that Iran is the new demon will not be easy. McChrystal's spurious claim that Iran "is reportedly training fighters for certain Taliban groups" is as desperate as Brown's pathetic echo of "a line in the sand".
During the Bush years, according to the great whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg, a military coup took place in the US, and the Pentagon is now ascendant in every area of American foreign policy. A measure of its control is the number of wars of aggression being waged simultaneously and the adoption of a "first-strike" doctrine that has lowered the threshold on nuclear weapons, together with the blurring of the distinction between nuclear and conventional weapons.
All this mocks Obama's media rhetoric about "a world without nuclear weapons". In fact, he is the Pentagon's most important acquisition. His acquiescence with its demand that he keep on Bush's secretary of "defence" and arch war-maker, Robert Gates, is unique in US history. He has proved his worth with stepped-up wars from south Asia to the Horn of Africa. Like Bush's America, Obama's America is run by some very dangerous people. We have a right to be warned. When will those paid to keep the record straight do their job?

Excellent article by John Pilger. Iran is a remote, peaceful, Non-Proliferation Treaty signatory, which has no territorial ambitions, is occupying no other countries, has invaded no other country for centuries and has repeatedly called for and voted for a nuclear weapons-free Middle East.
In contrast, US-backed, nuclear armed Apartheid Israel is occupying the former territory of 5 other countries (Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Egypt and Jordan) and has militarily attacked 11 other countries (Sudan, Egypt, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Tunisia, Libya, Uganda and the US – in the 1967 attack on the USS Liberty that killed 34 US servicemen in cold blood and was very likely was complicit with the US Government in the 9-11 atrocity as evidence by the University of Copenhagen discovery of nanothermite high explosive in all WTC dust samples examined: http://mwcnews.net/content/view/29921/42/ ).
About 0.1 million people die from opiate drug-related causes each year out of the 7 million who die from the effects of drugs in general (mostly from tobacco and alcohol) and hence about 0.8 million people have died from opiate drug-related causes since the invasion of Afghanistan, of whom about 90%, i.e. 0.9 x 0.8 million = 0.7 million people, have died as a result of the huge expansion of the Afghan opium industry under US Alliance occupation – the US restored the Taliban-destroyed Afghan opium industry from 6% in 2001 to 93% of world market share today.
Iran has a huge heroin addiction problem and leads the world in attempting to stem the Westward flow of heroin and opium from US-ruled Occupied Afghanistan. The UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UN ODC) has praised Iran’s anti-heroin efforts. More than 3,700 Iranian border control officers have died while defending Iran, Central Asia, Russia and Europe against well-armed drug traffickers from US-occupied Afghanistan (more than 12,000 others have been injured) (see: http://bellaciao.org/en/spip.php?article19234 ).

What's uncanny, frightening, and deeply depressing, bordering on despair; is that the same dreary and tired war propaganda model, used so 'successfully' to support the criminal attack on Iraq, is being rolled out once more in relation to Iran.
Don't journalists ever learn anything? What's the matter with them? How can the same threat from non-existant threat from weapons of mass destruction, the same lies, the same war-hysteria, be presented as the truth, yet again? Are our memories really that short?
I think Obama's was specifically by the ruling elite in the United States, precisely because he could 'get away' with attacking Iran; something another white conservative would find far more difficult. Obama is a new version of Tony Blair, and that's not meant as a compliment!

Yes, Iranians overthrew the Shah, but Mi6/BBC installed Khomeni as a replacement. Repressive Islamism exists in most other oil states too.

Mike uncovers papers which accused the BBC of biased reporting as Iran descended into revolution in 1978 and 1979. The documents show that the BBC's Persian Service found itself attacked on all sides, with the most vociferous critics claiming that the Corporation was not simply reporting events but influencing them in favour of regime change.
As Ayatollah Khomeini sat in exile in Paris, the BBC stood charged with galvanising the radical cleric's supporters and acting as his mouthpiece in Tehran.

When the sabre-rattling began, with hysteria about Iran's so-called nuclear threat, me and my Iraqi husband looked at each other and went, "Here we go again." But, sadly, thanks to Netanyahu's speech at the UN, the 'us and them' mentality is so deeply entrenched that if you're not with 'the West' you're a 'terrorist' and that's that. As for Israel's rejecting Richard Goldstone's report - I saw that coming a mile off.

Give me a reason why West is worried about Iran's so called independence? If Iran were developing solar energy, would the west object?

John P, I have a deep respect for your journalism and geopolitical understanding, but this article doesn't ring quite true. The USA is not able to take effective military action, so there is no need for the psyops.
However - your keen brain and sharp pen might look at the reason why mister weak and slippery, the creature of Rupert, appears to be front runner for the top EU job. Rupert rides again - insurance against the "dastardly Europeans" legislating against media monopolies ?

Like it or not pete999 Iran are entitled under the terms of the NPT to develop nuclear power and build
enrichment facilities, they are also not required to advise anyone when they plan or begin building a facility, they are required to advise of its existence 6 months before it goes active. So they are sticking to the terms of the NPT and the west are attempting to make a story out of it that involves them developing
nuclear weapons. We do this despite the intelligence agencies advising that Iran is not doing so. We don't like Iran, we didn't like Afghanistan and while for years we liked Saddam and Iraq we suddenly decided to dislike him , so we can certainly believe that ran should be doing all they can do to defend themselves from our dislike, unfortunately they appear to be behaving like grown ups. How dastardly.

It is never mentioned that the 'military machine' creates a stupendous (sorry, have forgotten the statistics) amount of pollution and that of a particularly noxious type of pollution. Defeats the purpose the US talking about climate change until they do something about their regular warring.

What's uncanny, frightening, and deeply depressing, bordering on despair; is that the same dreary and tired war propaganda model, used so 'successfully' to support the criminal attack on Iraq, is being rolled out once more in relation to Iran.
Don't journalists ever learn anything? What's the matter with them? How can the same threat from non-existant threat from weapons of mass destruction, the same lies, the same war-hysteria, be presented as the truth, yet again? Are our memories really that short?
I think Obama's was specifically by the ruling elite in the United States, precisely because he could 'get away' with attacking Iran; something another white conservative would find far more difficult. Obama is a new version of Tony Blair, and that's not meant as a compliment!

The documents show that the BBC's Persian Service found itself attacked on all sides, with the most vociferous critics claiming that the Corporation was not simply reporting events but influencing them in favour of regime change.

When the sabre-rattling began, with hysteria about Iran's so-called nuclear threat, me and my Iraqi husband looked at each other and went, "Here we go again." But, sadly, thanks to Netanyahu's speech at the UN, the 'us and them' mentality is so deeply entrenched that if you're not with 'the West' you're a 'terrorist' and that's that. As for Israel's rejecting Richard Goldstone's report - I saw that coming a mile off.

Like it or not pete999 Iran are entitled under the terms of the NPT to develop nuclear power and build
enrichment facilities, they are also not required to advise anyone when they plan or begin building a facility, they are required to advise of its existence 6 months before it goes active. So they are sticking to the terms of the NPT and the west are attempting to make a story out of it that involves them developing
nuclear weapons. We do this despite the intelligence agencies advising that Iran is not doing so. We don't like Iran, we didn't like Afghanistan and while for years we liked Saddam and Iraq we suddenly decided to dislike him , so we can certainly believe that ran should be doing all they can do to defend themselves from our dislike, unfortunately they appear to be behaving like grown ups. How dastardly.

It is never mentioned that the 'military machine' creates a stupendous (sorry, have forgotten the statistics) amount of pollution and that of a particularly noxious type of pollution. Defeats the purpose the US talking about climate change until they do something about their regular warring.

USS Liberty: Periscope Photography May Finally Reveal Truth

The facts are well known. USS Liberty, an American intelligence collection ship operated by the U.S. Navy with 294 men aboard, was attacked by Israeli aircraft and motor torpedo boats in international waters in clear weather during the 1967 Six-Day War. Thirty-four men were killed and 171 wounded. The ship was so badly damaged it had to be sold for scrap.
Israel called the attack a "tragic accident," claiming the ship was mistaken for an ancient Egyptian horse carrier less than half her size. Survivors and many top U.S. officials dismiss the Israeli story as contrived, unbelievable and untrue.
Survivors cite numerous falsehoods in the Israeli account. For instance, Israel claims the attacking jets circled the ship three times looking for a flag and that no flag was flown. They say a cease-fire order was given even before the ship was hit by a torpedo and that no further shots were fired. They call it a very brief case of "friendly fire" that ended when they saw our flag. They say they offered help immediately after the torpedo explosion.
Not true! A large American flag was clearly displayed in a good breeze and the attacking pilots did not circle looking for it. The torpedomen continued firing for another 40 minutes after the torpedo explosion, even firing upon life rafts in the water. Their offer of help did not come until two hours after the torpedo explosion. Many other conflicts exist between the Israeli and American versions.
In fact, the Israeli assault on the Liberty remains the only major maritime event in American history that has not been investigated by the Congress. For comparison, the U.S. committed more than 300 people and seven months to investigating the uncontested single hit by an Iraqi missile on USS Stark in the Arabian Gulf. Yet, even though 250 survivors of the Liberty say Israel is lying about the 75-minute attack on their ship, no member of Congress since Adlai Stevenson II has shown the slightest interest in finding the truth. When pressed, members of Congress generally tell their constituentsas they have since 1967 that an investigation would be impossible because too much time has passed, and because Israel could not be compelled to testify.
Submarine Photography Can Prove What Happened
Moments after the attack, several Liberty crewmen reported seeing a periscope very close to the ship. Then the periscope vanished as quickly as it had appeared.
A few weeks later, Liberty survivor Joe Lentini was approached by another sailor in the cafeteria of Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Virginia. Lentini was in uniform and on crutches. His ship's name, "USS LIBERTY," was embroidered on his shoulder.
"Were you there?" the sailor asked, seemingly astonished. When Lentini confirmed that he was, the man continued. "We were there," he said. "Our submarine. We saw the whole thing. We took pictures. Then we sent an officer back to the Pentagon to deliver them."
Lentini was so stunned by this news that he neglected to get the man's name or the name of the submarine. When he looked for the man again later, he was nowhere to be found.
Further Confirmation
I asked my Liberty shipmate, then-Lieutenant Jim O'Connor, what he knew about a submarine operating near us. Jim's job in the Liberty would have made him among the most likely people to know such things. Before the attack I had seen him plotting what looked to me like a submarine track on a chart.
Jim looked stunned. "I don't know how you learned about that," he said. "Yes, there was a submarine near us. If you ever quote me I'll swear you are lying." From then until he died 25 years later of Lou Gehrig's disease, Jim never mentioned the submarine again. When I asked him about it, he denied the earlier conversation.
During the next few years three other naval officers in key positions to know about such things all told me, "Yes, there was a submarine with you. There were three. They spent most of the war on the bottom, then they got out in a hurry."
Recently one of Liberty's intercept operators, Charles Rowley, told me that just before the attack he had intercepted a very strange, very short radio signal that he had forwarded to Washington. Instead of acknowledging his effort, Washington promptly ordered him to destroy any copies of that signal and to ignore any like it that he heard in the future. He felt he was being scolded for doing his job.
Rowley concluded that he had picked up a submarine signal and asked some other technicians about it. These men mentioned "Project Cyanide" but were unable or unwilling to say more. He concluded that "Cyanide" and the strange track on the chart all were associated with a compartmented submarine project to which only a very few people were privy. Most of those men died in the attack.
Frontlet 615
For the next several years, "Cyanide" and the mystery submarine remained elusive. One Liberty survivor mentioned a submarine to a free-lance reporter who wrote a book about it. Nearly everything he wrote was based on guesswork and was wrong. The book did nothing to advance the story.
Then in 1988 the Lyndon Johnson Library declassified and released an intriguing, highly sensitive document with the rare "Eyes Only" security caveat. This "Memorandum for the Record" dated 10 April 1967 reported a briefing of the "303 Committee" by General Ralph D. Steakley. Members present were Walt Rostow, Foy Kohler, Cyrus Vance and Admiral Rufus Taylor.
According to the memo, General Steakley "briefed the committee on a sensitive DOD project known as FRONTLET 615," which is identified in a handwritten note on the original memorandum as "submarine within U.A.R. waters." (At that time Egypt was formally known as "The United Arab Republic.") After considering alternatives, "the proposal was approved by the committee principals."
This memorandum was filed in the LBJ Library's USS Liberty archive. Why there? Obviously it has something to do with the Liberty. Could this have been the submarine we have heard about since 1967?
Survivors filed further Freedom of Information Act requests with the Library, Navy, Department of Defense, National Security Council, National Security Agency, Central Intelligence Agency, Joint Chiefs of Staff and elsewhere seeking more information. We sent copies of the declassified memo to support our request. In every case we were told that there is no record within the government of Cyanide or Frontlet 615 or of any submarines operating near the Liberty in 1967.
When we called General Steakley, he told us that his job for nine years with the Joint Chiefs of Staff was to win approval of such projects from the appropriate authorities. He was rarely involved in the projects themselves. He could remember nothing about Frontlet 615.
Breakthrough
In February 1997, we were contacted by a man who, like the first visitor in the cafeteria, told us, "I was there. We watched the attack through the periscope and took pictures." He added, "News reports said Liberty was under attack for only five minutes, but that attack lasted more than an hour."
This person identified himself as a relatively senior member of the crew of the submarine, but he was unwilling to give his name or to talk to us except through a third party, as he feared punishment for telling the story. He did, however, give us the name of the submarine: USS Amberjack SS522, a Guppy (snorkel)-equipped diesel boat built in 1945. He also told us that Amberjack's mission was reconnaissance within U.A.R. waters. Apparently Amberjack was the Frontlet 615 submarine.
This source gained credibility when we obtained Amberjack's official ship's history from the Department of Defense. Amberjack was indeed in the area during the Six-Day War, just as he said.
Further searches of Navy-oriented Web sites on the Internet quickly turned up four more Amberjack crewmen from the "Med Cruise" of June 1967. Some of these were Amberjack's most senior enlisted men. All four of these men, contacted by telephone, readily told us that they were very close to USS Liberty when we came under attack. Amberjack was so close, they said, and the sound of gunfire, missiles and the torpedo explosion so loud, that some of the crew thought Amberjack was under depth charge attack.
These men, all career submariners and all fairly senior at the time, had not seen or talked to one another for many years. Yet they all told the same story. They were very close to or "almost directly under" Liberty when the ship came under attack. Amberjack was specially fitted for periscope photography and was fully capable of photographing the attack, they said, although none of these four was certain that pictures were taken.
All four men told us that Amberjack proceeded from the Gaza Strip to a brief stop at Souda Bay, Crete, where the ship was kept at anchorage and the crew was not allowed ashore. Next, Amberjack went to Malta, where she tied up near the Liberty.
All four men told us that Amberjack was only one of five submarines in the Gaza Strip area. Others were USS Trutta SS421, USS Requin SS481, and French and Italian submarines. Any of those might also have photographed or recorded the attack.
Amberjack Skipper Denies Everything
Next we located Amberjack's 1967 skipper, August Hubal. By coincidence, Hubal was an Annapolis classmate of Liberty's Executive Officer, Phil Armstrong, who died in the attack. Hubal's room at the Naval Academy was directly across the hall from that of Liberty's Research Operations Department Head, David Lewis. Hubal knew both men well.
Now a retired Navy captain, Hubal denies everything. Interviewed by telephone, he insists that his ship was nowhere near Liberty. Amberjack was at least 100 miles away, he says. When we told Captain Hubal that several senior members of his crew, including a periscope photographer, have told us they were within sight of the attack, he shrugged that off. "They must be mistaken," he says, apparently still muffled by ancient security restrictions.
Why Is This Important?
These stories matter because they can resolve at last the differences between Israeli and American versions of what happened.
For 30 years Israel and its supporters have denounced survivors as liars and anti-Semites for reporting what happened to their ship. Members of Congress are unwilling even to listen to their stories. These men seek justice.
Recent White House executive orders call for the declassification of virtually every record more than 30 years old. Amberjack photography and other such reports fall in that category.
If the submarine photography can be found, it should show that the ship's flag was clearly visible to the attacking fighters and torpedo boats. Pictures also should show that the Israelis continued to fire from close range with the flag and other markings in clear view long after the torpedo explosion that they claim ended the attack. Pictures may reveal the methodical machine-gunning of Liberty's life rafts in the water. Other Amberjack records, reports and sound recordings should show the duration of the attack and other details denied by the attackers.
Liberty survivors will continue their quest for these records. We believe they exist and we think they can be found.
With those files and photographs declassified, Israel never again will be able to pretend that the survivors of the Liberty attack are lying.

According to the memo, General Steakley "briefed the committee on a sensitive DOD project known as FRONTLET 615," which is identified in a handwritten note on the original memorandum as "submarine within U.A.R. waters." (At that time Egypt was formally known as "The United Arab Republic.") After considering alternatives, "the proposal was approved by the committee principals."
This memorandum was filed in the LBJ Library's USS Liberty archive. Why there? Obviously it has something to do with the Liberty. Could this have been the submarine we have heard about since 1967?
Survivors filed further Freedom of Information Act requests with the Library, Navy, Department of Defense, National Security Council, National Security Agency, Central Intelligence Agency, Joint Chiefs of Staff and elsewhere seeking more information. We sent copies of the declassified memo to support our request. In every case we were told that there is no record within the government of Cyanide or Frontlet 615 or of any submarines operating near the Liberty in 1967.
When we called General Steakley, he told us that his job for nine years with the Joint Chiefs of Staff was to win approval of such projects from the appropriate authorities. He was rarely involved in the projects themselves. He could remember nothing about Frontlet 615.
Breakthrough
In February 1997, we were contacted by a man who, like the first visitor in the cafeteria, told us, "I was there. We watched the attack through the periscope and took pictures." He added, "News reports said Liberty was under attack for only five minutes, but that attack lasted more than an hour."
This person identified himself as a relatively senior member of the crew of the submarine, but he was unwilling to give his name or to talk to us except through a third party, as he feared punishment for telling the story. He did, however, give us the name of the submarine: USS Amberjack SS522, a Guppy (snorkel)-equipped diesel boat built in 1945. He also told us that Amberjack's mission was reconnaissance within U.A.R. waters. Apparently Amberjack was the Frontlet 615 submarine.
This source gained credibility when we obtained Amberjack's official ship's history from the Department of Defense. Amberjack was indeed in the area during the Six-Day War, just as he said.
Further searches of Navy-oriented Web sites on the Internet quickly turned up four more Amberjack crewmen from the "Med Cruise" of June 1967. Some of these were Amberjack's most senior enlisted men. All four of these men, contacted by telephone, readily told us that they were very close to USS Liberty when we came under attack. Amberjack was so close, they said, and the sound of gunfire, missiles and the torpedo explosion so loud, that some of the crew thought Amberjack was under depth charge attack.
These men, all career submariners and all fairly senior at the time, had not seen or talked to one another for many years. Yet they all told the same story. They were very close to or "almost directly under" Liberty when the ship came under attack. Amberjack was specially fitted for periscope photography and was fully capable of photographing the attack, they said, although none of these four was certain that pictures were taken.
All four men told us that Amberjack proceeded from the Gaza Strip to a brief stop at Souda Bay, Crete, where the ship was kept at anchorage and the crew was not allowed ashore. Next, Amberjack went to Malta, where she tied up near the Liberty.
All four men told us that Amberjack was only one of five submarines in the Gaza Strip area. Others were USS Trutta SS421, USS Requin SS481, and French and Italian submarines. Any of those might also have photographed or recorded the attack.
Amberjack Skipper Denies Everything
Next we located Amberjack's 1967 skipper, August Hubal. By coincidence, Hubal was an Annapolis classmate of Liberty's Executive Officer, Phil Armstrong, who died in the attack. Hubal's room at the Naval Academy was directly across the hall from that of Liberty's Research Operations Department Head, David Lewis. Hubal knew both men well.
Now a retired Navy captain, Hubal denies everything. Interviewed by telephone, he insists that his ship was nowhere near Liberty. Amberjack was at least 100 miles away, he says. When we told Captain Hubal that several senior members of his crew, including a periscope photographer, have told us they were within sight of the attack, he shrugged that off. "They must be mistaken," he says, apparently still muffled by ancient security restrictions.
Why Is This Important?
These stories matter because they can resolve at last the differences between Israeli and American versions of what happened.
For 30 years Israel and its supporters have denounced survivors as liars and anti-Semites for reporting what happened to their ship. Members of Congress are unwilling even to listen to their stories. These men seek justice.
Recent White House executive orders call for the declassification of virtually every record more than 30 years old. Amberjack photography and other such reports fall in that category.
If the submarine photography can be found, it should show that the ship's flag was clearly visible to the attacking fighters and torpedo boats. Pictures also should show that the Israelis continued to fire from close range with the flag and other markings in clear view long after the torpedo explosion that they claim ended the attack. Pictures may reveal the methodical machine-gunning of Liberty's life rafts in the water. Other Amberjack records, reports and sound recordings should show the duration of the attack and other details denied by the attackers.
Liberty survivors will continue their quest for these records. We believe they exist and we think they can be found.
With those files and photographs declassified, Israel never again will be able to pretend that the survivors of the Liberty attack are lying.
