Dear Supporter,
Whip Demo 9th April at Randwick Racecourse
The use of whips in horseracing is very much in the news at the moment
highlighted by the release of a study in January, carried out by Dr David
Evans and Prof. Paul McGreevy, which determined that whipping does
not make a horse run faster.
The Australian Veterinary Association is also reviewing its policy on
whip use in horseracing and it is expected that a recommendation is
being considered to further withdraw its support for the use of the whip
at its upcoming policy meeting in May.
The new policy being considered reads "Whips should not be used to
increase a horses speed in a race. The use of the whip can cause
excessive pain and it is a welfare issue when used on horses while
racing."
This is exciting news as the Racing Industry has always hidden
behind the AVA's acceptance of the use of the whip in horseracing.
This is all about to change.
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
On the 9th April, we will be conducting a demonstration outside the
main gates at Randwick Race Course. It is important we have as
many people there as possible to voice the views of the majority
of Australians and I'm sure all horses, that the whip is cruel.
We need to support what will hopefully be a momentous decision
by the AVA to abandon their support for the use of the whip. The
decision will not only further exacerbate the public relations
nightmare that this issue has become but also bring the issue
one step closer to being challenged in a court of law.
Please come along and support this action.

Where: Meet on footpath outside Randwick Racing Track - The new
Gate 5 - Alison Road/Darley Street, Entrance Plaza
When: 9th April from 11am-1pm
Dress: Important! Please dress as if you are going to the races, or at
least neat casual. (It does make a difference.)
What to bring: Snacks, water, umbrella. All flags, banners and
placards will be provided.
If you've never been to a demonstration before and don't know what to
expect and perhaps feel a little daunted, feel free to give me a call on
0412 039 788 or send me an email toelioc@horseracingkills.com and
I'll answer any questions you may have. Our demonstrations are
always peaceful and friendly. Most people have a great time and fee
l empowered for taking a stance for animals.
Hope to see you all there but please RSVP to enquiries@horseracingkills
or lynda@animal-lib.org.au |
