“No Carbon Tax” coalition formed and calls for election
Twenty-two diverse organisations representing thousands of Australians all over the country have signed a letter to Prime Minister Julia Gillard opposing the carbon tax, the Carbon Sense Coalition announced today.
The letter says the tax is “undemocratic” and breaches a commitment the Prime Minister gave in the lead up to the 2010 federal election.
“Prior to the 2010 election, you specifically pledged – on numerous occasions – that your government would not introduce a carbon tax without first seeking an explicit mandate from the Australian people through an election,” the letter says.
“To introduce this tax is a breach of this commitment and makes a mockery of our democratic process.
“If you continue to feel – despite the overwhelming environmental and economic evidence against this tax – that you must do so, then we call upon you to request the dissolution of parliament so that a new election may be called, and a mandate sought from the Australian people.”
